I'm planning a pub crawl in SF next month and I've never done this before so I'm looking for some advice from folks who have. I need help trying to figure out a route. Also, do you make arrangements with the places you plan to stop or just show up? Etc, Etc. I'm hoping the SF SantaCon organizers will chime in here since they seem to be experienced and successful at this.

Re: Need advice on organizing a pub crawl in SF
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 3:08 PMI'm not from SF but I've had luck by visiting the pubs and speaking with the manager. I usually go with another Santa organizer and we visit all the bars in one night. We also try to speak with them before 7pm to work around their busier times. I've had good luck with this approach.
Sometimes the manager/owner remembers Santa and this can either help or hinder your "negotiation." I've talked down some folks who didn't care for Santa and been invited to bars by owners who love Santa. Case by case basis really.
This much is evident...for success in a SF event, do not include Oakland! wot?
Depending on the size of your group, you can negotiate the "no cover" policy at the door.

Are you just looking for good areas or for good strategies? There are a lot of good bars in China town that never get hit by crowds and serve great drinks (ling po's comes to mind) The two things you need are bars big enough to be bum rushed, and bars close enough that you can stumble in and out of them. That of course is just one Santa's opinion.
PS Post on how we get invited to your pub crawl for more enthusiastic responses :) -

Re: Need advice on organizing a pub crawl in SF
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 10:32 AMOk, here are some of the details thus far:
I expect a small group, between 10 and 20 people.
(A few more would be welcome but at that size we won't be big enough to bum rush any place so I don't think we'll need special arrangements with bar management. I plan to avoid places with door charges unless they'll waive them for us.)
It's going to take place on Sunday of St. Pattys weekend starting at 2pm.
You have to dress up as a stuffed animal of some kind. (not a furry)
If you'd like to join us PM me and I'll send you an invite. -

Re: Need advice on organizing a pub crawl in SF
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 10:55 PMsince this is going to be a VERY busy weekend, i would suggest trying to organize the crawl with the managers. even though your group may seem small to you, as a bartender who will be working that same weekend, i can assure you that any place you give notice to will be much more receptive to your group with a little warning. -

Re: Need advice on organizing a pub crawl in SF
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 10:36 AMand maybe pick nonstandard st. pat day bars....if you are wanting to be served and drink, vs. standing around, in standing room only...or, hey maybe that is what you want....
:-D
